Samsung’s Galaxy Tab’s impending update to 10.1 will bring more with it than simple bug fixes, including features that span enterprise security, media streaming, touch-based usability and more.
Samsung’s Media Hub is being pushed pretty hard, so the update will allow users access to streaming content that spans multiple devices–the idea being that a user could rent a movie while sitting at their desktop, but finish watching it on their Galaxy Tab.
Multimedia use is a big deal for tablets, but the real major component of the update is the TouchWiz interface, which lays atop Android Honeycomb. Samsung’s put a lot more into it than just adding skins and wallpapers. Check out the video to see it in action:
Unlike HTC’s Sense UI, TouchWiz doesn’t so much replace the entire look of Android, but it does make some significant changes to the user experience. This update has some really interesting tweaks in regards to those changes, from reducing the navigation to system settings toggles to a single tap and simplifying the on-screen clock’s font, to adding “mini apps,” which are basically windowed apps that can sit side-by-side on the same screen.
Wi-Fi printing will be built-in, as well as enterprise-geared security features like on-device encryption and VPN connectivity. In a move that looks like it’s meant to directly answer similar offerings from both HTC and Apple, Samsung is including FindMyMobile, which users can use to locate a lost or stolen Galaxy Tab, lock it, or even remotely wipe its data.
